9 Common Laminate Flooring Mistakes — and What Each One Costs to Fix

Laminate is one of the least forgiving floors to install badly. It floats, which means it moves—and every mistake below comes from failing to respect that movement. The failures rarely show up on day one. They show up in month four, as a gap that opens across a doorway, a squeak that follows you down the hallway, or a row of planks peaking in the middle of the living room.

Below are the nine common mistakes when laying laminate flooring, what each one actually costs to put right, and how a professional installation avoids it. 1. Incorrect subfloor preparation

Laminate telegraphs everything underneath it. Manufacturers typically require flatness within about 3/16” over 10 feet, and Charlotte’s older housing stock rarely delivers that without work. Skipping the flatness check produces hollow spots, flex underfoot, and eventually cracked locking joints where the plank spans a dip.

Cost to fix: full removal and reinstall. Self-leveling compound costs little — pulling up 1,200 square feet of laminate to apply it costs a great deal. Done right: we lay a straightedge across the entire floor, map the deviations, and level or grind before a single plank comes out of the box.

2. Poor underlayment selection

Underlayment is not padding. It is acoustic control, minor smoothing, and — over concrete or below grade — the vapor barrier that keeps slab moisture out of the core. Using attached-pad product over a slab with no additional vapor retarder is a common and expensive error.

Cost to fix: moisture damage typically means replacement, not repair. Done right: underlayment is specified per room based on substrate and moisture testing, not chosen once for the whole house.

3. Inaccurate measuring and cutting

Under-ordering leaves you short mid-install and often unable to match the dye lot. Poor cutting produces gapped end joints, ragged wall lines the trim cannot cover, and doorway transitions that never sit flat.

Cost to fix: a mismatched dye lot in the middle of a run is visible forever. Done right: precise measurement, a 7–10% waste allowance for cuts and future repairs, and every box checked for the same dye lot before installation starts.

4. Skipping acclimation

Laminate expands and contracts with the humidity of the room it lives in. Installing planks straight off a cold truck, or out of a garage in August, locks the floor in at the wrong dimension. It then either gaps in winter or peaks in summer.

This matters more in Charlotte than in a lot of markets. The swing between humid July and dry, heated January is significant, and it is the single most common cause of the laminate failures we are asked to repair.

Cost to fix: peaked floors usually require removal and reinstallation. Done right: planks acclimate in the actual installation rooms at normal living temperature and humidity, for the full period the manufacturer specifies. We schedule that time in rather than compressing it.

5. No expansion gap at the perimeter

A floating floor needs room to move at every fixed edge — walls, columns, pipes, door jambs, hearths. Butting laminate tight to a wall guarantees peaking the first humid week.

Cost to fix: if you are lucky, trim removal and undercutting the perimeter. If not, reinstallation. Done right: a consistent expansion gap around the entire perimeter, sized to the run length and covered by trim.

6. Incorrect locking and sealing

Every locking system has its own angle and sequence. Forcing a joint, tapping directly on the tongue, or working the wrong direction damages the locking profile in ways you cannot see until the joint separates months later.

Cost to fix: individual plank replacement in a floating floor means disassembling back to the damaged plank. Done right: installers who know the specific locking system, with the correct tapping block and pull bar.

7. Ignoring room transitions and long runs

Laminate needs a break — an expansion joint or T-molding — at doorways and in runs beyond the manufacturer’s maximum continuous length. Running one uninterrupted sheet of laminate through five rooms is a guaranteed callback.

Cost to fix: cutting an expansion joint into a finished floor is possible but rarely invisible. Done right: the transition plan is drawn before installation, not improvised at the doorway.

8. Installing over a failing floor

Floating laminate over loose vinyl, hollow tile, or damaged subfloor buries a problem instead of solving it. The new floor inherits every flaw beneath it and now costs twice as much to reach.

Cost to fix: two floors to remove instead of one. Done right: we assess what is under there and tell you honestly whether it can stay.

9. Wrong product for the room

Standard laminate in a bathroom, laundry room or basement is a failure with a delivery date. Water resistance is not water immunity.

Cost to fix: replacement, plus whatever the water did to the subfloor. Done right: we specify luxury vinyl plank or tile for wet and below-grade areas and reserve laminate for where it performs.

What these mistakes actually cost you

Short term: uneven surfaces, creaks and squeaks, visible gaps at end joints and walls. Long term: reduced lifespan, joint failure that spreads plank to plank, moisture damage in the subfloor, and a floor that has to come out years before it should have. In nearly every case, correcting a failed laminate installation costs more than the original installation did — because now you are paying for demolition and disposal on top of a brand new floor.

FAQs

Can I install laminate flooring myself? 

Physically, yes. The nine failure modes above are why we get called to remove DIY laminate more often than any other floor. If the floor is going into a room you care about long-term, the labor saving rarely survives the first repair.

Why is my laminate floor gapping? 

Usually acclimation or expansion-gap related — the floor is contracting and has nowhere to reference from. Occasionally it is a locking-profile failure from installation damage.

Why does my laminate floor squeak or creak? 

Almost always an unlevel subfloor. The plank flexes into a void with each step. Fixing it means removing the floor in that area and leveling underneath.

Can damaged laminate planks be replaced individually?

 In a floating floor you generally have to disassemble back to the damaged plank from the nearest wall. This is why keeping 7–10% attic stock from the original dye lot matters.

How long should laminate acclimate?

Follow the manufacturer’s specification — commonly 48 to 72 hours in the installation room at normal living conditions. Some products state otherwise, so we go by the spec sheet rather than a rule of thumb.
