What SPC flooring is made of
An SPC plank is built in layers, top to bottom:
- Wear layer — clear urethane, measured in mils, determines lifespan
- Decor film — the high-resolution printed wood or stone image
- SPC core — limestone powder + PVC, rigid and dense
- Backing / attached underlayment — acoustic and cushioning layer on many products
The limestone content is what makes the core dense and rigid, and everything distinctive about SPC follows from that density.
What SPC does better than anything else
Dimensional stability. SPC barely moves with temperature change. This is its defining advantage: it is the correct specification for sunrooms, enclosed porches, rooms with large west-facing glass, and any space that gets genuinely hot in a Charlotte August. Softer cores expand and contract enough to gap or peak in those conditions.
Tolerance of imperfect subfloors. A rigid core spans minor dips and irregularities rather than telegraphing them to the surface. It does not remove the need to level a bad subfloor, but it is far more forgiving of an average one — which matters in older housing stock.
Dent and impact resistance. The dense core does not compress the way a foamed composite does. Furniture legs, appliance rollers and dropped objects leave less behind.
Genuinely waterproof. The core cannot swell — limestone and PVC do not absorb water. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements.
Thinner for the same strength. SPC delivers rigidity at a lower profile than WPC, which helps at doorways where floor height against an existing threshold is constrained.
What SPC does less well
It is harder underfoot. The density that makes it stable also makes it firmer to stand on than WPC. In a kitchen where you cook daily, this is worth weighing.
It transmits more sound. A dense core is more acoustically live. A good attached pad or separate acoustic underlayment largely resolves it, but the difference is real in an upstairs room.
It feels cooler. Some people like this; in a bedroom, most do not.

What to look for when buying SPC
Wear layer first — 20 mil for households with kids or pets, 12 mil minimum otherwise. This matters far more than core type for how long the floor looks new.
Overall thickness — 4mm to 8mm; thicker feels more solid.
Attached underlayment — IXPE or cork backing improves sound and comfort noticeably.
Embossed in register — texture aligned to the printed grain, which is what makes it read as real wood.
Locking system — quality of the click profile determines how well the joints hold up over years of seasonal movement.
