Laminate’s material cost is a fraction of engineered hardwood’s, and that gap is what makes whole-home laminate projects realistic on a mid-range budget.
But the useful comparison is cost per year of service. Engineered hardwood installed well lasts thirty to fifty years and can be refinished once or twice along the way. Laminate lasts fifteen to twenty-five and then comes out. Over a thirty-year ownership horizon, the two get closer than the sticker price suggests — and hardwood is the only one of the two still worth something at the end.
If you are selling in five years, laminate is the better financial decision. If this is your long-term home, run the longer math.
Durability: they fail in different directions
Laminate resists scratching better. The aluminum-oxide wear layer is harder than any wood finish, which is why it is our default recommendation for households with large dogs.
Engineered hardwood resists time better. It scratches more easily, but scratches in wood can be sanded out or spot-repaired. A scratch in laminate is a scratch in a photograph — it exposes the core and stays there.

Water and Charlotte humidity
Neither is a bathroom floor. For genuinely wet areas, use tile or luxury vinyl plank.
For everywhere else, engineered hardwood’s cross-layered core makes it far more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood across Charlotte’s humidity swing — which is exactly why engineered is the standard specification here for slab-on-grade construction and over radiant heat. Laminate’s fiberboard core will swell irreversibly if water reaches it through a seam, and swollen laminate cannot be dried back out.

A quality engineered hardwood with a 3mm or thicker wear layer can be sanded and refinished once or twice — new stain, new sheen, damage erased, without replacing the floor. Thin-veneer engineered products cannot, so wear-layer thickness is the specification that matters most when you buy.
Laminate cannot be refinished at all. When it looks tired, it is replaced.
Resale value
